Ottawa Bluesfest

Okay, it’s mid-July and our weather has been pretty depressing this month. Summer just isn’t wanting to arrive on the west coast. But elsewhere across North America, they’re dealing with some intense heat. The temperature has been in the high 30’s and even low 40’s for much of the month in places across the central US. Humidex advisories are in place for several provinces this week. And in Ontario, it’s supposed to reach 37 on Thursday!

Spoke with my family in Ottawa last night.  They had a brutal storm pass through the region (which is typical for the Ottawa Valley).  And it created some scary moments at Ottawa’s Bluesfest. Check out this video of the stage collapsing in the middle of a vicious wind storm.  At least four people were injured. Organizers say they’ll keep in touch with the weather office from now on to try and have a better heads up during freak situations like this one.

Mother Nature is incredible!

Lee’s Donuts

I love donuts.  And my favourite place to get them in Vancouver, is at Lee’s Donuts on Granville Island.  I got to spend the morning down there with the team, learning the tricks of the trade when it comes to making donuts.  They make them all by hand.  They make them fresh.  They serve them warm.  They’re incredible.  They literally melt in your mouth.

Here are some photos of my morning at Granville Island.  And here’s a look back at my weather hits from Wednesday morning.

Here Comes the Snow Again…

Good Morning from Whistler!

The snow has once again started to fall up here — and it’s slowly starting to feel like winter once again.

All eyes will be watching the big hockey game this afternoon between Canada and Russia. Hopefully the boys can pull off their much-needed win.

And a great accomplishment from Whistler gal Ashleigh McIvor who took the Gold medal in Women’s Ski Cross yesterday at Cypress Mountain. Here’s hoping our athletes can add more medals to our collection later today.

This morning we gave you a “behind the scenes” look at the broadcasting operations up here in Whistler. Check it out!

Have a great day!

Snow in Whistler!

posted on February 16th, 2010 - Filed in Uncategorized - No comments »

Happy Tuesday from Whistler! I’ve been up here for a week, now. And it finally snowed in the Village overnight! But the snow caused some problems with the Alpine course in the Creekside area. And officials had to postpone today’s scheduled runs. The weather has also caused delays down at Cypress Mountain.

But the weather is going to be FANTASTIC over the next few days with sunshine expected for both Whistler and Metro Vancouver. But very mild temperatures. So it will be interesting to see how that impacts the outdoor events. Hopefully it doesn’t make our already tough snow situation, even tougher!

A friend and I hopped in the car and drove down to Vancouver yesterday afternoon to get a little “Vancouver vibe” into our systems. And I was really surprised with how QUIET the Sea to Sky Highway was. Absolutely NO delays in either direction. And the security checkpoint just north of Squamish — was a ghost town.

Here’s a look at one of my live hits from this morning’s Breakfast Television. I was doing BT from the Village Stroll and we looked at how businesses are doing with the Olympics in Whistler.

Today we’re working on finding you cheap and easy ways to get you up to Whistler during the Olympics. You’ll see that tomorrow on BT!

Have a good day!

Wet Weather

posted on February 3rd, 2010 - Filed in In the News, Weather - No comments »

For some reason, everyone loves talking about the weather.  It’s a great “go-to” conversation when you’re chatting with relatives who don’t live in the area.  And right now, the weather is a huge topic of conversation, with the Olympics on the horizon.

January is proving to be unusually mild for us here on the South Coast.  Vancouver gets lots of rain every single year.  But our current “wet spell” is a little strange.  Especially given the fact we’re hosting the Winter Olympics in just over a week.  This “winter weather” certainly isn’t what most of the world is used to seeing!

Hard to believe crews are having to truck in snow from Manning Park, in order to keep the slopes nice and white on Cypress for the Olympics!

And one of the main centres for the Olympics is closed today.  But it’s not because of the weather.  The Robson Media Centre in downtown Vancouver has been shut down because of a flood last night!  A pipe burst on the main floor and flooded the centre.  So crews are spending today mopping everything up and hope to have the centre up and running once again by tomorrow morning.  Luckily, no equipment was damaged!

By the way, we’ll be doing Breakfast Television live from Robson Square each morning during the Olympics.  Dawn and Riaz will be there.  And I’ll be doing BT live from Whistler each morning.   We’re excited about the next few weeks!  And we hope you are, too!

Have a great day!

Just Over Half Way!!!

Hi Guys…

Today was a HUGE Milestone for me in my weight battle…!! Are you ready? Wait for it…..

I HAD TO ADD A HOLE TO MY BELT!!!! (And on the good end)

Yup, I’m down 13 pounds, hiking everyday and continue to watch my portion sizes when eating. But you know what else?? I’m allowing myself those “treat” days. IT’S THE PLAYOFFS!! How can you NOT enjoy the odd nacho, or chicken wing?? I’ve decided that you have to keep it real. Exercise, eating healthy, BUT keeping odd treat in your life in moderation when you want. Otherwise how can you be expected to maintain these positive changes? So, another 10 pounds to go and I’ll be at my “goal weight”.

The Sun Run on Sunday really kicked my butt. I’m going to have to change my “training” routine in order to even have a chance at surviving the Scotiabank Vancouver Half Marathon and 5K in June. (sigh) Hope you are all doing well, and getting out there too!!

More to come, enjoy this great weather….talk to you soon!
