OK.  I’ve taken the plunge and joined Twitter.  Up until the last few days, the world of Twitter has been a total mystery to me.  But I’m slowly getting the hang of it (with a few tips from Tweeting veterans like Dawn and Thor).

Twitter Safety!

posted on July 15th, 2009 - Filed in Uncategorized - 3 comments »

With all the Twitter Talk we’ve been doing on Breakfast Television (around 6:45am daily) thought it would be great to talk safety! Great article by Gillian Shaw this past weekend in the Vancouver Sun…

you can follow me @dawn_chubai and @bt_vancouver

Here are 11 Twitter tips to keep you safe:

1. Friends and Followers – be selective about who you follow. If someone is following way more people than they have followers then it may be best to avoid them. They could be “Follow Spammers” more interested in gaining exposure than in finding interesting Tweets.

2. Before you follow someone, check out their recent Tweets to see if they are of interest to you before you add them (or of interest at all). Never auto follow.

3. Keep a limit on the number of Twitterers you follow. If you are following too many people then you’re simply going to suffer from information overload and you won’t be able to find the gems so easily.

4. Don’t click on a link from anyone you don’t know or trust. Many Twitterers use TinyURL or similar to shorten URLs (I do) but this camouflages the true source so you don’t know what your clicking on. These could be disguised links to potentially dangerous sites or viral downloads so be careful and keep your anti virus software up to date.

5. Monitor the Tweetosphere and make sure you are aware of anyone who mentions you so that it comes to your attention and you can be ready to counter any adverse Twittering.

6. Read the Twitter blogfor updates and information on malware and spam issues.

7. Secure your Twitter name. Get a Twitter profile in your business name before someone else does.

8. Use your common sense when Twittering and remember that most of these announcements can be seen by anyone and everyone. You don’t really have to announce that you’re away from home.

9. If someone you’re following overloads you with spam then use the Twitter block at the right of the side panel to block them and let Twitter know too.

10. Call on the community. If something adverse does happen then make your community aware of it. You will be amazed at the support, advice and action of the collective.

11. Use the “protect my updates” function in your Twitter settings if you only want people you select to view your Tweets.

12. Don’t spam – goes without saying but just because lots of others are doing it doesn’t mean you should get spammy too. Watch your tweets and always try to add value rather than sell.

Real Life Twitter Talk:

Twitter TV

BTW: According to the BBC, a company in the UK “selling” tweeters to companies…and we’re now seeing more spam than ever on Twitter…will this create less interest in the social networking site? not for me!

How is it that a short week always feels so long?!?!? I didn’t mind having a mid-week day off – but I am still glad it’s Friday!

enjoy the weekend- Riaz and Michel are back on Monday so you’ll have your regular BT Team on board for the week- we’re busy gearing up for our big outdoor show on Friday with everything from Sumo Wrestling, to Pie Eating and the grand finale a DUNK TANK…must remember to wear a dark t-shirt :-)

What a Day.

What a day yesterday was -

I walked alone into a greek restaurant for an early dinner and ended up sharing my meal around the television set with the staff in disbelief. I know I am not alone- Twitter and Facebook were all abuzz with memories and thoughts.

In looking through some of these Facebook status updates I was not surprised to see the criticism of him as well. Everyone has a right to their opinion about anything – but what I found tasteless were some of the jokes that have come up…just another indicator of how we tend to dehumanize celebrities…I work in the media so I know sometimes we are the worst offenders – but no matter what you think of him – someone died – and there’s nothing funny about that.

Ir doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor-successful or not-interesting or dull…when it’s your time, it’s your time. Be brave in life and live it best you can leaving nothing important for “tomorrow”

Sunshine and smiles (and today a few tears),

Twitter Me This

Today’s Blog Talk segment on BT featured the relevance of Twitter in our daily lives.  Check out this article on why lots of people are signing up for Twitter but many are not returning.  I follow about 175 people right now and I find I’m having to filter through a lot of garbage.  Frankly, I don’t care what P. Diddy had for breakfast!  However, Twitter has also been a gold mine for entertainment stories breaking during BT- so in that respect I can see the value.  The best thing to remember is to keep the number of people you’re following to an average of 50-100 if you want to make some sense of all the tweets coming in!

Also, HUGE news out of Hollywood today.  Martin Scorsese is working on a biopic about Frank Sinatra.  Check out that story here.  The big buzz is that Leo should play the crooner because he has starred in the last 4 Scorsese movies (including the soon to be released Shutter Island).  I’m thinkin’ James Franco could pull it off.  Who do you think could play Sinatra?

Till tomorrow

WOW!  What a show last night at the Centre.  The Flight of the Conchords descended on Vancouver and played to a sold out crowd in fine fashion.  Arj Barker (who plays Dave on the show) got things rolling with a superb opening stand-up routine.  Then, the stage was set for the New Zealand folk parody duo.  They played a solid set, mixing their best songs and leaving tons of room for improv.  It was a fantastic evening which had everyone on their feet by the end.

Sorry about not updating lately. last week was crazy busy with all the 1410 AM co-hosting.  One little nugget that emerged was when I got beamed into the studio for the Star Trek (5 Hammers) review.  Check it out here

Also, I have finally succumbed to the insanity that is Twitter- you can get me @thordiakow

Peace!
