The Best of ‘09

OK folks, here are my top 5 movies of 2009!

5.) Fantastic Mr. Fox- The best animated feature this year because it used actual puppets!  Wes Anderson is a genius.

4.) A Serious Man- One of the Coen Brothers finest, though it will leave you scratching your head.

3.) The Hangover- Easily the funniest movie of the year, if not 5 years.

2.) Inglourious Basterds- Tarantino’s best flick since Pulp Fiction and Christoph Waltz deserves an Oscar.

1.) Star Trek- By far the most fun at the movies this year- action, romance, humour & great storytelling.

Please feel free to post your comments about these picks or add any of your own…

The Golden Globe nominations were announced today- click here for the complete list.

Yes, there were some amazing flicks and performances this year- Star Trek, District 9, The Hangover, Up In The Air and I absolutely loved Michael Stuhlbarg in “A Serious Man”.

Now, let’s take a moment to “dis”honour this year’s worst movies.  Here’s a great article to get the creative juices flowing.

Bankability

So Will Smith has topped the list of Hollywood’s most bankable stars, yet again.  Read the details here.

This story is predictable and boring so I want to look forward- let’s talk bankable stars down the road.  Who is the next big thing?  Someone suggested Sam Worthington today.  It’s a great call since the Terminator Salvation star will soon be seen in James Cameron’s Avatar & the Clash of the Titans remake.  I still think Karl Urban (Bones in the new Star Trek) is gonna be huge.  I’ve also heard Chris Pine, Justin Long and the guys from The Hangover are ones to watch in the next few years.  Let me know your thoughts…

Who Would Direct You?

Paris Hilton is in Cannes and spouting off that she wants to show off her “real” acting talents and collaborate with director Quentin Tarantino.  I pray to God he would never seriously consider this.  It got me thinking about today’s question.  Who would be your dream Hollywood director to work under?  I would choose David Fincher- he can be tempermental to work with but he’s a visionary.  I would also go with Ridley Scott, though I fear he’s past his prime.  Terry Gilliam would be cool too because he’s such a mad genius!  Let me know your thoughts.  Also, Curtis Hanson is brilliant- LA Confidential is one of the best movies of all time.

Great weekend- checked out Eat Vancouver on Saturday after I saw Star Trek for a third time- that flick is amazing!  Spent yesterday cleaning up the aparment and reading Stephen King’s “It”.

Stunningly Hilarious

WOW!  What a show last night at the Centre.  The Flight of the Conchords descended on Vancouver and played to a sold out crowd in fine fashion.  Arj Barker (who plays Dave on the show) got things rolling with a superb opening stand-up routine.  Then, the stage was set for the New Zealand folk parody duo.  They played a solid set, mixing their best songs and leaving tons of room for improv.  It was a fantastic evening which had everyone on their feet by the end.

Sorry about not updating lately. last week was crazy busy with all the 1410 AM co-hosting.  One little nugget that emerged was when I got beamed into the studio for the Star Trek (5 Hammers) review.  Check it out here

Also, I have finally succumbed to the insanity that is Twitter- you can get me @thordiakow

It’s Coming

As Eric Bana (playing Romulan villain Nero) quips in the new Star Trek movie “The wait is over”- I get to see the new one tonight at Scotiabank theatre!  I can’t wait for this movie.  It is currently getting rave reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.  The movie will be out in theatres to the general public this Friday.  It will be cool to see what kinds of new fans will get on board the Star Trek franchise…not like they need new fans!

Also, tune in to CFUN 1410 AM today between 2-6 for Man Radio with Patrick Maliha & I.
