When you work on a morning show, sleep is your best friend. Last night, “Sleep” and I, just weren’t getting along. I was tossing and turning. And eventually, just gave up and got out of bed. I think I’ve been up since 2:40 this morning. Ugh.
Most of us who work on Breakfast Television, get up around 4 o’clock each morning. Sometimes earlier, depending on the day. If you’re not a morning person when you start doing BT, you quickly learn how to become one.
I’m usually pretty good when it comes to early mornings. I’ve never overslept (knock on wood). I can operate on very little sleep. And I’m not one of those people who needs to be in bed at 6 or 7 each night when I have to get up early the next day. In fact, my usual bedtime is around 10-10:30. I think that’s pretty standard!
The worst night of the week for us “early risers” — is Sunday night into Monday morning. That’s because your body has adapted to a “regular” sleep schedule from the weekend. And it has to make a hard adjustment back into the morning routine for Monday.
Everyone has their own ways of dealing with the early mornings. One thing that helps me cope, is a big cup of coffee when I get to work (Michel and I usually take turns buying java for each other on the way in…although lately, she’s been buying a lot more of them than I have…). But what helps even more, is an afternoon nap. Even if it’s just 20-minutes, that little snooze can go a long way.
My big “secret” to coping with the early morning hours — comes on Friday afternoons. I go home right after work…get right back into bed…and go to sleep (usually for 2-3 hours). This way, I can recharge my batteries and get back onto a “normal” schedule for the weekend so I can have a regular social life, without being tired at 8 o’clock at night.
There’s most certainly a nap in my future this afternoon. Hopefully, “Sleep” and I will make up and get back on track for tomorrow.
Pleasant dreams!
