Food Bank Friday

This morning I spent the morning at the Greater Vancouver Foodbank in anticipation of Foodbank Friday here at City TV on December 16th.

We always know the need is great. What you may not realize is that the need is up by 15 percent in addition to  being 10% below normal levels right now – so we have some work to do!

We all know about the non-perishables needed (high protein, beans ect) and most of us know that when you donate money to the food bank, each dollar they get actually translates into $3 spending power. But what exactly do they buy with that money?

They buy perishables like Fruits, Veggies, Bread, and meat, but also things like baby food and diapers. So you see…they need everything and anything you are prepared to give. Another thing to remember is that the donations received this time of year actually nourishes families right through summer.

Please…come by the back lane of CityTV (180 West2nd) this Friday between 5:30 and 9am. Bring your food. Bring your money (cash, credit, interac is also accepted) and bring your smiling faces. We will be smiling right back at you and the smiles you won’t see (but know they are there) will be the ones on the mouths you helped feed.

See you Friday!

Cute picture of Cameraman with puppy Luca (also featured on BT this morning)…wonder if Richard is considering adding to his family???

Friday Fave – Lash Extensions!

posted on November 11th, 2011 - Filed in Fashion, Makeup, Uncategorized - No comments »

One of the great things about my job on BT, is I have the opportunity to test drive many things – from beauty products to restaurants! So, starting today…I am going to offer my “Friday Fave” – something that I have tried and love enough to tell you about! Not every “thing” is for “everyone” …but I’ll feature something every Friday, just in case you are interested!

I had the opportunity to try them out courtesy of  Noir Lash Lounge as they were working with the models for the  Malene Grotrian Fall Fashion Show and since I would be singing at the show, they thought they’d let me experience them for myself.

I will admit…I NEVER thought I would ever buy into the whole lash extension thing, but after trying them out, I am a huge fan!

They require a bit of care, but it really is just a matter of getting used to it. And now on the weekends, I don’t even wear eye makeup at all and my eyes still pop! They last me about 3-4 weeks before I need a fill (kind of like gel nail maintenance) and you can even nap while it’s being done!

For details, check out Noir Lash Lounge.

Just one of the things I am loving right now,

Dawn

This week’s  Transformation Project Update  is all about the importance of vegetables, and ways to can get more into your everyday eating!

Here are some simple ways:

1. Serve raw vegetables at every meal. Nearly everyone likes carrot sticks, celery sticks, cucumber slices, string beans, cherry tomatoes, and/or green pepper strips. They’re healthy, they have virtually no calories, they have a satisfying crunch, and they can substantially cut your consumption of the more calorie-dense main course. So make it a practice: A plate of raw vegetables in the center of the table, no matter what the meal is.

2. Take advantage of prepared veggies. We usually don’t espouse prepared foods. They’re usually more expensive and high in artificial flavorings, sugars, and sodium. But when it comes to prepared veggies — bagged salads, prewashed spinach, peeled and diced butternut squash, washed and chopped kale — we’re all for it. Numerous consumer studies find that we’re more likely to use bagged salads and other produce. In fact, the introduction of bagged, prewashed spinach in the late 1990s is touted as the main reason spinach consumption increased 16.3 percent in the United States between 1999 and 2001.

3. Sneak vegetables into breakfast and lunch. One reason we don’t get enough vegetables is that many of us consider them merely a side dish to dinner. If you really want to increase your vegetable consumption, you have no choice but to eat them at other meals. How?

Make salad a part of your everyday lunch.
Make egg scrambles a regular breakfast, using a scrambled egg to hold together sautéed vegetables such as peppers, mushrooms, zucchini, asparagus, or onions.
Eat leftover veggies from last night’s dinner with breakfast or lunch.
Cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, and celery, all the time.
Make vegetable sandwiches, using almost any vegetable that won’t roll out of the bread.

4. Start each dinner with a mixed green salad before you serve the main course. Not only will it help you eat more veggies, but by filling your stomach first with a nutrient-rich, low-calorie salad, there’ll be just a bit less room for the higher-calorie items that follow.

5. Once a week, have an entrée salad. A salade niçoise is a good example: mixed greens, steamed green beans, boiled potatoes, sliced hard-boiled egg, and tuna drizzled with vinaigrette. Serve with crusty whole grain bread. Bon appétit!

6. Fill your spaghetti sauce with vegetables. We typically take a jar of low-sodium prepared sauce and add in string beans, peas, corn, bell peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes and more. Like it chunky? Cut them in big pieces. Don’t want to know they’re there? Shred or puree them with a bit of sauce in the blender, then add.

7. Order your weekly pizza with extra veggies. Instead of the same old pepperoni and onions, do your health and digestion a favor and ask for artichoke hearts, broccoli, hot peppers, and other exotic vegetables many pizza joints stock these days for their gourmet pies.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THEM…
-They act to detox your body:
Apples: Pectin is a fiber that binds to toxic metals and helps us to cleanse our bodies of them. Green apples have the sour flavour especially stimulating to the liver and gallbladder.

Beets: A blood-tonifier; beets strengthen the liver and are especially important for iron.

Radish: This spring food stimulates the gallbladder. The darker the colour the radish, the more potent its cleansing properties. (See if you can find the fire black radish!)

Lemon: There’s that sour flavour again. Oh- and it has pectin like apples! Fresh lemon juice helps us to emulsion fats lightening the load on our gall bladders to produce bile. Fresh lemon juice also cleanses the blood and promotes regular elimination.

Flaxseed and Flaxseed Oil: Loaded with essential fatty acids, particularly the omega-3, flax seeds and flaxseed oil are essential for many cleansing functions throughout the body.

Sprouts: Tend to have the health benefits of the plant that they are to grow into. The sprouting process releases an abundance of enzymes to aid digestion. They are very powerful cleansing food!

Lots of health benefits, and the fill you up too!

Caught up with Dr. John Gray who, in his travels (he has been around the world 18 times!) has taken what he has learned from other cultures and devised a workout that allows you to sit on the couch a majority of the time!

Check out his demo below!

Don’t forget to tune into BT on Mondays and CityLine on Wednesdays for my Transformation Project Updates!

If you have any tips to keep the momentum going with your workout – feel free to post them for all to see!

Earth Hour is tomorrow between 8:30 and 9:30pm and to recognize that, many restaurants will dim the lights (McDonald’s Canada is doing the same, anticipating an energy savings in one hour that would amount to the estimated annual energy usuage of an average household!)

Here are a few of the participating hotels you may wish to check out!

Yew at the Four Seasons - Chef Oliver has created a special menu for this occasion – btw: this is my favourtite place ever :-)

All Fairmont Hotels ( 4 in Vancouver!)

100 Nights at the Opus -To compliment Earth Hour, the restaurant is offering a $45 set menu titled “Beyond the Hour” with 15% of food revenue being donated to the Japan Relief Fund.

Lights out!

Snack Time…with your help!

Hey All…I write a lot (talk about and think a lot about food)…for many of us, there never seems to be a shortage. We have heard about the effects proper nutrition has had on our youth with respect to learning levels and happiness.

In September 2005, approximately 10 Burnaby elementary schools were deemed at or below the poverty level.  The Burnaby Fire Fighters Charitable Society initiated a nutritional snack program at two of Burnaby’s elementary schools and a community centre. These schools were identified as having a high proportion of students from low income families, and nutrition was a major concern. Burnaby Fire Fighters purchase and deliver nutritious snacks for these schools on a regular basis. The teachers have reported great results from this simple program: children are more focused and learning in the classroom has improved.  To date, the Burnaby Firefighters assist 5 schools and are now receiving requests from high schools – where students have moved on to.  They hope to expand this program to other schools that have been identified as having similar challenges so that every child is being taken care of.

Now, here’s a GREAT way you can help!

Salon M2 will be having their Grand Opening Celebration on Friday November 19.  They are offering FREE HAIR CUTS by DONATION from 8am – 5 pm.

ALL PROCEEDS will go directly to the Burnaby Firefighters Charitable Society Nutritional Snack Program.

Until we ALL eat again,

Dawn

Diner’s Choice in Chinese!

Last week I had the pleasure of spending the morning with  Sichuan Chef and Chinese Restaurant Awards Judge Robert Wong to create some of his signature dishes. I also found it interesting that although he was destined to be a Sichuan Chef as three generations before him had been – he actually had dreams of being a professional hockey player!

I was also informed, and to no surprise, that Vancouver (with special acknowledgement to Richmond) has been singled out by Conde Nast Traveller Magazine  as having some of the THE BEST CHINESE CUISINE in the world! Click here for the article in the Vancouver Sun.

The 2011 HSBC Chinese Restaurant Awards have announced the Diner’s Choice Award winners, including a couple of new categories including Best Hong Kong Style Milk Tea and Best Modern Chinese (please click on the above link for a complete listing)

I look forward to Emceeing the Chinese Restaurant Awards in January!

Yes…I was an Earls Girl…

We all had jobs prior to our current careers (some of you maybe still looking for your long time job) – I filed papers for the department of education (bor-ing), I was a “winks owl” Mascot (like from the Mac’s stores – why do people like to attack mascots??), I worked at the GAP (I don’t even like folding my own clothing!), and I was an “Earl’s Girl”.

What makes a great job?

Feeling valued is on the top of my list – but it doesn’t hurt to have a job where you also get to have alot of fun! Thanks to all of you I have that experience everyday on Breakfast Television!

As a former Earl’s employee I was recently interviewed for an internal Blog for Earl’s Restaurants… check it out here.
