Lessons I Have Learned So Far

posted on December 15th, 2011 - Filed in Local Events - 4 comments »

I had the honour of speaking to the “Women of Substance” Entrepreneurial Group (founded by chanteuse Deborah Ledon)  last night. They asked me to share my journey from childhood to today – how I got to where I am, where I see myself going, and how I balance my life as a TV Host and Singer as well as a “sometime” actress.

At the end of my “story’ I shared the 7 lessons I have learned so far….here they are -  I have added my personal relationship to that lesson in italics – coles notes of the speech if you will:

1)Don’t be Afraid of Hard Work (I have been working since I was 14, often working multiple jobs)

2)Everything Is trainable except personality (it’s what was said to me when I was given my first TV gig – and if you didn’t think there was a STEEP learning curve…check out my AUDITION for that first TV gig!)

3) Don’t be afraid of stepping out of your comfort zone (had I not been prepared to move from Edmonton, where I was doing well, achieved success and had my family and friends close – I would not have the great opportunities I have here now in Vancouver)

4) If the situation is not to be changed…change your attitude. You have a choice. (this was my most recent lesson. When the format of the show changed (again) I had to make a choice about how how was going to react to changes not in my control)

5) have at least 1 person who believes in you (for those times you don’t believe in yourself) Someone who is your Biggest fan. (my hubby had the faith that the move to Vancouver would be a great one for me…I was uncertain I would have the same opportunities I had in Edmonton…I have surpassed any expectation)

6) Be that person for someone else…especially another woman. (women have a reputation for “hating other women” and not wanting our fellow females to do better than us…that we feel threatened by each other. Prove them wrong and pay it forward.)

7) be grateful and give back to the community…most of us live a blessed life beyond what much of the world could ever hope for. (I try to do this by the giving of my own personal time to as many charities as I can. To help them raise money. To use my profile to benefit others. )

Feel free to share your lessons by commenting on this post…I would love to hear them, and maybe “learn” a little more!

Kittens, Bloopers and Balls.

What a fun week it was. Dawn Chubai was on location for most of the World Cup soccer games (see Dawn’s Blog for Details ). Greg Harper was at the Libre Room to see the Netherland’s surprise win over Brazil. Since soccer was the theme, that’s how I’ll start this weeks blog. Not the World Cup, something on a smaller scale; but perhaps with greater impact.
An organization that believes a simple soccer ball might save a young person’s life.

Who doesn’t like bloopers? I cut together this beauty, compliments of our favourite trafficaster, Michel McDermott

The big movie release of last week, at least for the fans, was Twilight Saga: Eclipse. Here’s what Thor Diakow thought of it.

We celebrated Canada Day with a little Trivia. Let’s see if you can outsmart the BT Hosts.

If you’re a regular viewer you’ll know that every Monday we bring in a few cute, adoptable animals from the SPCA. We’re happy to say most of them have been adopted. But, there was one kitten this past week that just wanted to escape.

Thanks for reading and watching. Talk at you next week. Enjoy the sunshine ;)

McHappy Day

Wednesday May 5th is McHappy Day.   At every single McDonald’s restaurant in Canada — you can buy a Big Mac, a Happy Meal or an Egg McMuffin — and one dollar from every sale will go to Ronald McDonald House Charities, Ronald McDonald House, and other local children’s charities across the country.

Riaz and I will be on location for Wednesday’s show from 6-9 — doing Breakfast Television live from the Grandview Highway and Renfrew Street location in East Vancouver.

It’s a good excuse to “eat out” tomorrow!

See you at 6am!

Cancer Sucks-Let’s take it Down!

posted on April 9th, 2010 - Filed in Charity, Fashion, In the News, Local Events - No comments »

I have had a couple of members in my extended family fight the battle. Some who had beaten it, some who continue to fight, and some who fought hard but lost.

On Breakfast Television you will notice that today, we are are wearing pretty yellow flower pins. April is Daffodil Month and  today is Daffodil Day for the Canadian Cancer Society, BC and Yukon and on Breakfast Television, we are showing our support!

Every three minutes, another Canadian is diagnosed with Cancer- perhaps you know someone.

You can help, show your support by wearing a daffodil.

One Little Ticket, One BIG Lift!

Kids Up Front  is a fantastic organization that lets you get rid of tickets for sporting events you cannot use, and give them to kids who might not have the opportunity to go otherwise…in fact since June 2004, Kids up Front has provided more than 140,000 tickets to underprivileged kids!

With the 2010 Winter Games just around the corner, they are putting the call out- if you can’t use your tickets, LOTS of kids would LOVE the opportunity to go…to donate, call 604-266-KIDS, go to their  website  or drop off your tickets to 402-134 Abbott Street in Gastown weekdays between 9am and 5:30pm
