New York EATS!

posted on September 8th, 2010 - Filed in Food and Dining, Uncategorized - No comments »

Just returned from vacation with my husband in New York City. Hubby and I are not big adventurers and we plan our trips based on where we want to stay, and where we want to eat. Our latest trip was no exception – many indulgences including dinner at:

Per Se : expensive yes (ridiculously so), worth it, um…probably once to say you went…met the expectation – absolutely. What I WOULD do next time, and this is a great option that is wayyy more affordable – sit in the “salon” you can still eat less than the normal 9 courses and experience the same ambiance.

at Per Se

LUPA - Mario Batali’s spot, casual Italian, super busy (one woman was told it would be an hour and a half wait and was like “ok!” ) reasonably priced and delicious! For dessert, the  Marscapone with Spicy Dates were amazing.

Joel Robuchon L\’Atelier- located in the Four Seasons, Brad and I went there before hopping on the red eye back home. We sat at the counter and enjoyed watching our food being prepared with such care and looking so beautiful I had to include some pics – highly recommend!

Quality Meats - if you didn’t know it was a top restaurant, you’d walk by it - from the outside you’d think it was a deli that was closing for good – but upon entering, you know you are in for a special experience -go hungry -portions are huge and no question, you need to LOVE meat.

Just a few spots we experienced!

Generation Next

Michel and I had a chance to host the Generation Next Fashion Show last night at Granville Island. Wow! What an awesome event!

It was put on by the Honey Mustard and showcased three local designers — giving them a chance to have their fashions modeled in front of an audience.

There was such an awesome selection of styles. But in the end, Victoria’s Sofia Mendez Scheone came out on top.

Congrats to everyone who took part! We had a blast!

Lookin' good with Canucks Team Store Outlet Manager Derek

Who doesn’t like a good bargain?!  Especially when it comes to our Vancouver Canucks.

On Thursday, I did the weather live from the brand new Canucks Team Store Outlet at the corner of Hastings and Renfrew (right across from the PNE).  This place has AMAZING deals on clothes and used equipment from the Canucks.  I loaded up on a hat, hoodie and t-shirt — for just $60!  A great place on old merchandise.  But really, does any merchandise get old when it comes to our Canucks?  It’s timeless!

Check out my weather hits from Thursday morning.

PS — Pre-season tickets for the Canucks are now on sale (starts September 21st against Calgary).  Go here to get them!

Lee’s Donuts

I love donuts.  And my favourite place to get them in Vancouver, is at Lee’s Donuts on Granville Island.  I got to spend the morning down there with the team, learning the tricks of the trade when it comes to making donuts.  They make them all by hand.  They make them fresh.  They serve them warm.  They’re incredible.  They literally melt in your mouth.

Here are some photos of my morning at Granville Island.  And here’s a look back at my weather hits from Wednesday morning.

They are potentially the future leaders of tomorrow. And when they get together each summer at UBC to put together their action plan, it seems that nothing is impossible.

Meghji Bros on BT

Did you catch the big announcement on Friday’s show?

Big brother Zain joined the on-air team for Breakfast Television Calgary! Yes, this is the Zain formerly of “eTalk” and “How To Look Good Naked Canada”. His start date will be Tuesday September 7, so spread the word. At least Mama Meghji knows we’ll stay out of trouble with the 10pm bedtime on the regular.

Joan Rivers – A Piece of Work

I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am about this one…

Joan Rivers – A Piece of Work opens in Vancouver later this week.  And tonight, I’m going to check it out at a special screening with Thor and Riaz.

OMG It's Joan Rivers on Rodeo Drive!

I am a HUGE Joan Rivers fan.  I ran into her on Rodeo Drive when I was in Los Angeles — and was blown away by the amount of paparazzi following her around, as you can see by the incredibly geeky photo my friend took of me.

Michel and Kyle with Joan Rivers

Michel and I went to see her last October when she performed at River Rock.  And she is by far, the funniest comedian I have ever seen in my entire life.  For being in her late 70’s, this woman is a true professional.  She was running around the stage keeping the crowd entertained with some of the most inappropriate and hilarious humour, I’ve ever heard.

If you EVER get a chance to see her in person — DO IT!

Check out the trailer for her movie here.  It’s getting really good reviews.  And watch BT for the full review on Friday morning!

This is going to be GOLD…!

Had the pleasure of spending the morning in Chinatown to promote the upcoming  Chinatown Festival this weekend and to celebrate Chinatown’s 125th Anniversary.  We made Steamed buns and ate a traditional Hong Kong breakfast…yummy! If you can, head to Chinatown this weekend – it’s a FREE family friendly event with food tastings, lion dancing, and kid-friendly activities!

One of my favourite Culinary Experts is Stephanie Yuen shared some of her favourite spots to go in Chinatown (below) and don’t forget to check out her Blog for more of her thoughts and restaurant picks , Beyond Chopsticks

For dimsum: Jade Dynasty Chinese Restaurant on Pender
For noodle/congee: Hon’s Wonton House on Keefer
For buns: Sun Fresh Bakery on Keefer
For HK Style Breakfast: Maxim’s Bakery & Cafe on Keefer
Grocery shopping: Chinatown Supermarket on Keefer.

How to Lose your Job in 2 Minutes…..

“I’ve been in this business 28 years and I’ve had it.” Cue the screenplay….. Steven Slater uttered these words before he grabbed some beer, pulled the emergency chute and escaped a Jetblue plane that had just arrived in NYC. It was the ultimate bird flip to his employers and now he’s being hailed as a working class icon.

Kudos to him for the courage because he made a choice. We all have that power. I have wake up every morning and make a choice to do what I do because it’s my passion. Steven went out in a blaze of glory in a fashion that has captured the headlines and made me think it’s only time before a movie is made about the trials and tribulations of showing restraint and patience working in customer service. I worked retail back in the day and remember the days of having to bite my lip when customers sounded off.

Heck, Next Media Animation has already jumped on Slater’s slide to stardom as you’ll see below:
