Avatar…Who Cares?

posted on March 8th, 2010 - Filed in Entertainment, In the News - No comments »

I love award shows. I think they give us a chance to reflect on “the year that was” in the entertainment industry. The hits and misses of music, movies and television. Plus, I love doing those Oscar pools with friends (I usually lose, but this year I won!).

Like many of you, I watched the 82nd Annual Academy Awards last night. I thought they were pretty good. Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin are two of my favourite comedic actors and they did a great job hosting the show together. But I wanted to see more of their act instead of montage after montage.

Avatar was the favourite to come out on top last night. But in the end, The Hurt Locker prevailed.

To this day — I still haven’t seen Avatar. And I still have absolutely no interest in seeing that movie. I’m usually a huge fan of the Science Fiction flicks. But for some reason — this one really isn’t appealing to me. Perhaps because it’s almost THREE HOURS LONG. If there’s one thing I can’t stand, it’s long movies. I have a very low attention span in the theatre. And if the story can’t be told in roughly two hours — I immediately lose interest in going. That’s why I can’t get into any of the Lord of the Rings movies. Way too long. I know I won’t be able to sit through them without going insane.

Despite Avatar’s length — everyone has been telling me to go check it out. Have you seen Avatar? If so — what did you think?

OK…Who saw Avatar and what did you think?  I thought it was visually stunning but lacked heart.  It was a predictable story with one-dimensional characters but MAN, what a ride!

Now, check out Jack Bauer interrogating Santa Claus- this is editing at its finest!

Also, Iron Man 2 comes out in May and the official trailer is out- check it out here.  I must admit I wasn’t the biggest fan of the first one but the sequel looks pretty kick ass.

Back from Vegas…in one piece.  The Warner Bros. Hangover DVD junket was an amazing experience.  Flying executive class, massive suite at Caesar’s Palace, Kobe steak dinner, interviewing celebrities and basically just taking it all in!  I’ll post the BT segment tomorrow featuring my interviews with director Todd Phillips and some of the cast of 2009’s most outrageous comedy.

So stoked for Avatar this week.  Can James Cameron pull it off?

Here’s something to pass the time- introducing 5-second films!

Enjoy…

Bankability

So Will Smith has topped the list of Hollywood’s most bankable stars, yet again.  Read the details here.

This story is predictable and boring so I want to look forward- let’s talk bankable stars down the road.  Who is the next big thing?  Someone suggested Sam Worthington today.  It’s a great call since the Terminator Salvation star will soon be seen in James Cameron’s Avatar & the Clash of the Titans remake.  I still think Karl Urban (Bones in the new Star Trek) is gonna be huge.  I’ve also heard Chris Pine, Justin Long and the guys from The Hangover are ones to watch in the next few years.  Let me know your thoughts…

HUGE concert news today- veteran electronic artists & soundscape pioneers The Orb are coming to the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver on June 16th!  Tickets are on sale at Zulu & Highlife (or Ticketmaster).  These guys are seriously brilliant- they’re promoting their latest album The Dream (pictured above).  I urge everyone to check it out!

Also…Brilliant article in The New York Times on how James Cameron’s new movie Avatar (set for release December 18th) may change filmmaking forever.  Check it out here.
