Avatar…Who Cares?

I love award shows. I think they give us a chance to reflect on “the year that was” in the entertainment industry. The hits and misses of music, movies and television. Plus, I love doing those Oscar pools with friends (I usually lose, but this year I won!).

Like many of you, I watched the 82nd Annual Academy Awards last night. I thought they were pretty good. Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin are two of my favourite comedic actors and they did a great job hosting the show together. But I wanted to see more of their act instead of montage after montage.

Avatar was the favourite to come out on top last night. But in the end, The Hurt Locker prevailed.

To this day — I still haven’t seen Avatar. And I still have absolutely no interest in seeing that movie. I’m usually a huge fan of the Science Fiction flicks. But for some reason — this one really isn’t appealing to me. Perhaps because it’s almost THREE HOURS LONG. If there’s one thing I can’t stand, it’s long movies. I have a very low attention span in the theatre. And if the story can’t be told in roughly two hours — I immediately lose interest in going. That’s why I can’t get into any of the Lord of the Rings movies. Way too long. I know I won’t be able to sit through them without going insane.

Despite Avatar’s length — everyone has been telling me to go check it out. Have you seen Avatar? If so — what did you think?

Jazz for a Cause!

Hey Everybody- keeping with the Charity Theme…there is a great event that Fred Lee (CBC, Vancouver Courier) and I are both emceeing called Jazzilla!  The event raises money for the Shooting Stars Foundation which produces special events with passion, integrity and innovation to raise money for people with HIV/AIDS.

Jazzilla is  afternoon pre-Oscar celebration, featuring many of Western Canada’s top vocalists performing songs of the Oscars.  How fun is that?

A phenomenal showcase of talent featuring internationally renowned touring artist Jennifer Scott, three-time Juno nominee Kate Hammett-Vaughan, Juno and National Jazz Award Nominee Karin Plato and many more.
Backed by Musical Director Miles Black on keyboards, Rene Worst on bass, Tom Keenleyside on Sax and Graham Boyle on drums, each performer will sing one piece specially selected for this tribute to the Oscars.

I will also be singing a song, Sooner or Later (Madonna) from Dick Tracey!

It will be a great time, and you’ll still make it home in time for the awards- click here for ticket information and performer bios.

Hope to see you there,

It’s official- Alec Baldwin & Steve Martin will be hosting the 82nd Academy Awards on March 7th, 2010.

This is sure to be comedy gold the likes of which we’ve never seen.  It will be the first time for Baldwin but Martin has hosted the annual ceremony twice before.

Today we’re asking for your most memorable (good or bad) Oscar hosting moments…
