Take a look at your TV Guide and you’ll most likely find an oversaturated schedule of contrived scenarios that depict anything but real life. Then, you come across this historic mine rescue in Chile and if you’re like me, can’t take your eyes of the screen.
It has all the makings of a mind blowing movie. The San Jose mine collapses and the miners are trapped in darkness for over two weeks before any contact with outside life. It is a mental, physical and spiritual battle of life versus death and then all of a sudden there is hope. The ending, as it looks so far, is a happy one with some emotional reunions with loved ones as “Los 33” make their way up from almost 700 metres underground.
Perhaps, one of the most powerful images was of 40 year old Mario Sepulveda emerging from the Phoenix capsule, emitting such a powerful and genuine celebration and appreciation for life, how could you not get goose bumps watching him? He made a statement that may begin to capture the experience trapped down below:
“I was with God, and I was with the devil. They fought, and God won.”
Who knows what really happened down there, but it makes me smile knowing we were able to bring you good news for once for something that could have ended up much worse.
Enjoy your Wednesday. Every single moment of it.
