Talk about getting brownie points for a science experiment. This father/son combo sent an iPhone to outer space and back and have the footage to prove it. Pretty incredible!

Reality Check

Take a look at your TV Guide and you’ll most likely find an oversaturated schedule of contrived scenarios that depict anything but real life. Then, you come across this historic mine rescue in Chile and if you’re like me, can’t take your eyes of the screen.

It has all the makings of a mind blowing movie. The San Jose mine collapses and the miners are trapped in darkness for over two weeks before any contact with outside life. It is a mental, physical and spiritual battle of life versus death and then all of a sudden there is hope. The ending, as it looks so far, is a happy one with some emotional reunions with loved ones as “Los 33” make their way up from almost 700 metres underground.

Perhaps, one of the most powerful images was of 40 year old Mario Sepulveda emerging from the Phoenix capsule, emitting such a powerful and genuine celebration and appreciation for life, how could you not get goose bumps watching him? He made a statement that may begin to capture the experience trapped down below:

“I was with God, and I was with the devil. They fought, and God won.”

Who knows what really happened down there, but it makes me smile knowing we were able to bring you good news for once for something that could have ended up much worse.

Enjoy your Wednesday. Every single moment of it.

When is a kiss just a kiss?

Yours truly becoming a thespian, the journey continues.

Week three in acting class had all of us perform a dry run of our scenes. I’m playing Ricky Roma from Glengarry Glen Ross and realized I’ve got a lot of work to do to bring the character to life. But I’m a guy that likes a challenge and will be good to go by the final class this Sunday.

An interesting discussion transpired though when it came to one scene that needed the actors to kiss. When is a kiss just a kiss? We are always hearing about Hollywood couples breaking up and I’ve often wondered if these small physical gestures lead to the downfall.

I’m an old-fashioned guy, but consider myself pretty open-minded when it comes to relationships as I’m not the jealous type. But the thought of watching my woman kiss another man in a scene makes me feel awkward. Like the awkward feeling you get when your butt cheeks clench up and you want the moment to pass. Heck, if I was the one doing the kissing, I’d be scared of potential halitosis. I’ve come across some scary examples in the past. Breath mints would undoubtedly be on stand by.

Sure it’s just work and it takes a huge understanding, but think about it. Would you be ok with your partner smooching with their scene partner? Hmmmm, hit me up and let me know what you think?

Eat Your Heart Out Denzel

denzelMan Up! I once heard that Denzel Washington still takes acting class. The fact the man, who’s one of the best in the business, is still open to improving and learning is admirable. Good thing he’s taking class though, as the competition just got a little stiffer.

This past weekend I signed up for an acting class for the first time in years. Acting was always a hobby of mine back in my high school days and I even took a couple of courses during my time at SFU.

A twelve person acting fundamentals course over at the Actor’s Foundry is the challenge at hand. Last night, we were broken into pairs and given specific scenes to work on throughout the month. For some reason, the instructor thought Ricky Roma would be a good character for me to chew on and he assigned yours truly a scene from the classic David Mamet piece Glengarry Glen Ross. Hopefully, Mama Meghji will forgive my use of Mamet’s favorite four letter word!

We will study the art for four weeks and deliver a final performance to “close the deal”. After only a few hours, I already have a new appreciation for the challenges actors face and how they turn words on paper into emotion on screen.

PS. One of my favorite movies of all time is Training Day featuring Denzel himself. One of the rare glimpes of seeing the perennial good guy, gone bad.

It’s Pre-Season…relax!

I had the chance to watch the Oilers take down the Canucks 3-2 this past week. It didn’t mean much because it was pre-season but Luongo, the Sedins, Kesler and Samuelsson were all on the ice.  The fans were ruthless!

Sure the tickets are expensive and we all want the Canucks to win all the time but these games mean little to nothing and we get the chance to see some young up and comers playing their hearts out to earn a shot at the big leagues. Hold off on the boo birds for now and let’s let the boys get settled.

At least it wasn’t as bad as what goaltender Carey Price had to face in Montreal. Ouch!

Have a great weekend, see ya Monday!

A moment on the lips…..

…equals a lifetime on those hips. So I’m 7 weeks into my Precision Nutrition program and the results are starting to show. I was shocked that my body fat was 18.9% when I began early August because I’m a pretty lean guy to begin with. I’m happy to say I’m down to 17.9% as of yesterday and I’ve been cooking and eating very clean. Knowledge definitely is power when it comes to nutrition and the best lesson I’ve been reminded of here is that whatever gets measured, gets managed.

Much debate over what’s more effective – making the right food choices or working out aggressively? Take a look at this latest study for some perspective and how long it takes to burn off your favorite snack foods. Now that is food for thought!

Man Down!

Another one bites the dust. One of my best friends, Sonny Gill bit the bullet this weekend and I was lucky enough to experience the moment with him and his new wife Navi. It was a traditional Indian wedding with the attire, rituals and a 500 person reception.

Call me crazy, but the older I get the more these moments are cherished and I get more emotional (cue a man tear or two). Think about it, the only time the entire group of family and friends gets together is for a wedding or a funeral. Thankfully for us it was to exchange nuptials.

Here are a couple of pics (courtesy of Sukhi Ghuman) from what was an epic celebration!
