Night Work

This was by far my favourite celebrity interview ever – Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters.  He was so candid and open to all my questions.  We chatted for about 20 minutes but here are the best parts…

Judges included Blogger  Melody Fury, Scout Magazine\’s  Andrew Morrison, Chef Dave Robertson from The Dirty Apron and BC Lions Jon Hameister-Reis and Jason Arakgi. Congrats to Rogue Kitchen and Wet Bar for taking home the honours of having the best chili in Gastown with second place going to PourHouse .  Fabulous Blues filled the air and  entertained the crowd!

forbidden planet

Hello Friends,

I must tell you about “Forbidden Planet” from 1956 now out on Blu-ray!  This movie is widely regarded as the grandaddy of all science fiction movies and represents the true golden age of Hollywood filmmaking.   The story is loosely based on Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” and features elaborate sets (with great matte paintings), strong performances, clever writing and big budget (for the time) special effects.  “Forbidden Planet” also features Leslie Nielsen in a rare dramatic role as the heroic Commander J.J. Adams and a brilliant Walter Pidgeon as Dr. Edward Morbius.  Honestly, if you have any interest in the history of sci-fi in Hollywood then please check out this movie, you won’t be disappointed.  It looks stunning on Blu-ray and contains loads of bonus features to whet your appetite.

BBQ on the Bypass

Michel and I were asked to put our skills to work this weekend and help out as judges at BBQ on the Bypass out in Langley.  While the event primarily showcases meats — there’s one part that’s perfect for those of us with a sweet tooth.  Pies.

Michel and I put on our aprons and chowed down on homemade pies.  What an amazing selection of baked goods from some very talented chefs.  We sampled everything from apple pie (three versions), to blackberry cherry pie, to strawberry kiwi pie, to sweet potato banana pie.  Some of them were, interesting, to say the least.  But for the most part, this was a very tough job.  And we walked away (barely) with very full stomachs and a massive sugar hangover.

Until next year!

A moment on the lips…..

…equals a lifetime on those hips. So I’m 7 weeks into my Precision Nutrition program and the results are starting to show. I was shocked that my body fat was 18.9% when I began early August because I’m a pretty lean guy to begin with. I’m happy to say I’m down to 17.9% as of yesterday and I’ve been cooking and eating very clean. Knowledge definitely is power when it comes to nutrition and the best lesson I’ve been reminded of here is that whatever gets measured, gets managed.

Much debate over what’s more effective – making the right food choices or working out aggressively? Take a look at this latest study for some perspective and how long it takes to burn off your favorite snack foods. Now that is food for thought!

Trevor LindenMichel picked the wrong day, to take a day off work!  The one and only Trevor Linden stopped by this morning for a chat.  He talked about everything from his early days as a Vancouver Canuck, to the current captain crisis and even about his new fitness club opening up in Coquitlam.  He is SUCH a nice guy.  Check out his chat with Riaz under BT Bites.

Thor and I at Scissor SistersThor and I checked out Scissor Sisters at Malkin Bowl in Stanley Park last night.  What an amazing show that was.  This group was on fire from start to finish.  And the thing I liked about them, is they sound EXACTLY like their album when performing live.  It was an awesome show — even though it was in the pouring rain.  Thor and I were soaked by the time the show was over!

If you ever get a chance to check them out — DO IT!

Blues and Chili – a Perfect Combination!

posted on September 15th, 2010 - Filed in Local Events - 1 comment »

The 2nd Annual Gastown Blues and Chili Festival is on Sunday September 19th ! I had a great time emceeing it last year - this year Joe Leary leaves the judges table to act as co-emcee! It will be great to work with him again!

Some of the top restaurants compete against each other to be awarded the designation of having the best chili, and some of the top Blues acts in the Lower Mainland perform…the event is FREE, and the chili is cheap…a perfect combination!
